commissioner kingsley. >> in light of what happened in newtown, connecticut, last friday i think it has focused the attention of all of us throughout the country in whatever capacity we live and work in, but particularly those of us that are working in some way with law enforcement. and we have the attention of folks around us now, the communities at large around this issue. what happened on friday is truly off the chart and beyond belief because children, large numbers of children, were the victims in this instance. at the same time when these mass killings, these mass shootings occur, everybody becomes very upset and distraught about it and little actually happens. a larger problem are the 30-plus,000 people that die from gun violence each year. another part of this problem. and i propose that while we have our focus on this that this commission focuses on reducing gun violence in san francisco. as the chief indicated, 45 of the homicides this year related to gun violence. there are probably other results or other deaths from guns from suicides, et cetera, that aren't included in that

going back a little bit, obviously it bears mentioning what happened in newtown, connecticut, the unimaginable tragedy that everybody's been talking about nationally. i think it's important that everybody take notice that the teachers at that school and the officers that responded did so as we've been training since columbine also here in san francisco and i think were it not for the heroic efforts of both the teachers and officers that that tragedy would have been way worse. the teachers, instead of evacuating and emptying those kids into the hallway, secured in place which kept them safe. actually it cost some of the teachers their lives, god bless them, and then the police officers as you saw them come on scene went straight into the school, which is exactly what san francisco police officers would do when there's the immediate imnepblt danger of serious danger of death, active shooter we'll go straight in. it's our job to put ourselves in harm's way and the cops in connecticut did that. on a very different note -- oh, i'm sorry -- we will be reinitiating our active shooter training that mo

elementary school here in newtown. upon realizing the intensity and difficulty of the situation, newtown called for surrounding police departments and state police to respond to assist. upon arrival of law enforcement officers at the school, they immediately entered the school as we knew this was an active potential active shooter situation. their focus was to search for students, faculty and staff and remove them to a safe area outside of the school. they did search every nook an cranny, every room and every portion of that school and accomplished that task. they took refuge to a staging area to reunite them with family members. as has been reported there were fatalities. there were 18 children pronounced dead at the school. there were two that were trance portded and pronounced dead at area hospitals and six adults pronounced dead at the school at the scene. as the governor reported, the shooter is deceased, deceased in the school. there's a great deal of work going on relative to that. that's the reason we have not

what do you think is the healing process going to be for newtown? >> it's going to be a long one, soledad. it's great that the people -- i think people realize that you and -- i'm in the media and i'm a newtowner. they realize this is a human issue. this isn't partisan, this isn't media. we all felt something here. something totally changed across the country and we happen to be at the epicenter of it. it's going to be tough for the town. the families, you know -- i can't even begin to understand what it's going to be like. the town is rallying. this community, i mean, i moved here when i was 2, in 1969. moved back, left when i went to college, moved back here to raise my children. and i can tell you the community is rallying. those of us who were fortunate enough not to lose people close, close, close to us, have been putting together -- just trying to feed people, trying to make sure there's some sort of infrastructure for when -- in particular, i'm involved with newtown united, a group trying to put together essentially an advocacy infrastructure

and right now in danbury, connecticut, about 15 miles away from newtown, a tribute to newtown, to the victims, the survivors, music, prayer. a short time ago a video tribute of the 20 children who died and the six adults who died and it was so emotional. so hard to watch. beautiful music playing. beautiful songs playing while everyone in this room, hundreds of people from throughout the state of connecticut experiencing it. one thing, anderson, i know it is the same with you, we have covered so many tragedies, it's so discouraging, bombings, shooting. what's amazing, here we made so many friends already. i'm grateful for the friends i've made at these tragedies but so sorry for making these friends. that is what is happening right now. people are getting together. there is no such thing as closure. there will be suffering, particularly the families of these loved ones. but the more people stay together, become friendly together, the easier that recovery will be for them. but it is never complete for so many people. anderson? >> gary, thanks. a lot more ahead, including a conversation
